Job searching is humbling and today, an especially frustrating quest.

A good way to connect with recruiters and company contacts for an informational interview or an over-coffee chat.LinkedIn requires effort on your part. If you're seriously looking for a job, hopefully you can find the drive to contact that staffer for Microsoft, Boeing or whatever is your dream company. It's all about networking, right?

Idealist.org
Looking for a service-oriented job? or events, speakers, volunteer opportunities...? This is a great site for so many things. In general, non-profits, are struggling along with the economy, but for those unwilling to take off their capes and deny their role in saving the world, idealist is a must.

Monster.com
We've all heard of it. Often dominated by the same companies, but has a pretty good search engine for narrowing down the thousands of listings. Also provides plentiful resources for job seekers. A couple downsides: the resume uploader causes some formatting issues. And, if you publicize your contact info, expect your share of bogus e-mails.

Craigslist.org
The all too simplistic lay-out bothers me, but others swear by Craigslist for shopping. It's been known to land a couple jobs too.

Good advice I've heard:

• Work your network. Let people know you are looking for a job. You never know if it's  friend-of-a-friend who helps you land you that coveted position.
• Research companies and go to their websites. Sometimes they only advertise openings on their own sites.
